Letter From The Division Director
Greetings Huskies! Homecoming is quickly approaching, and I want to take a few moments to share some information that parents might find helpful. I am often asked, “Do students need a date to go to Homecoming?” In other words, is the culture that students ask each other to the dance, or do they just go in groups? Though my statistics aren’t precise, I can comfortably say that the vast majority of students simply show up and don’t treat this as an event with a “date.” This is particularly true when they get on the dance floor! I never see them coupling up, but, rather, they dance in massive groups, often forming hype circles. It’s actually one of the more inclusive and uplifting events as students run to the dance to jump and sing along. Expect them to come home starving and covered in perspiration after their hour-long dance cardio session.
Another question that I often get is, “Does everyone rent one of these party buses?” This is something that we have seen grow in popularity, but it certainly isn’t required or necessary. Many students are dropped off by their parents or ride in cars with older students. Though I understand the appeal of having organized transportation for your child throughout the night, be mindful that you’ll want to have a clear conversation with the other parents sharing that transportation with your child. Make sure everyone in your group is aligned on what the evening’s agenda will be (dinner, where to go post-dance, etc.), and it will be a much better experience.
My last comment is that awkward thing that I have to write as a high school administrator before a big weekend. For parents choosing to host students at their house that weekend, please make sure to supervise them and refrain from providing alcohol. Having worked at independent schools for almost 25 years, I have seen far too many parents suffer school consequences as well as legal or liability consequences for “parties,” “gatherings,” and “sleepovers.” Though it is not the school’s desire to monitor off-campus gatherings, we do reserve the right to enact school-based consequences for “student alcohol or drug involvement that occurs off-campus and affects the life of the school community,” per the family handbook.
I am confident that this year’s homecoming will be a great evening that matches the enthusiasm and joy of the previous years. If you have other questions as parents that you think will help you plan and navigate that weekend, don’t hesitate to reach out to either me or Upper School Dean of Students Howard Chang.

All students and guests must arrive at the dance no later than 9:00 p.m. and may not leave before 10:00 p.m. Participants must stay for the entire hour. Currently-enrolled Flint Hill students in good standing are eligible to bring one outside guest; this guest must be approved by Dean of Students Howard Chang. Two Announcements for Senior Families
Senior Portraits: Seniors who have had their yearbook/senior portraits taken can now view and order online. You should have received an email from Freed Photography with your student's private gallery information. If you have not received this (check your spam too), please contact them at support@freedphoto.com or call 301-652-5452. Seniors who have not had their portrait taken should plan to have it taken on Friday, September 22. Be sure to schedule a time slot using this link.
Senior Yearbook Ads: The Iditarod staff is happy to announce that we are accepting orders for personal ads to honor our seniors in the 2024 yearbook! These ads, which are different from the free half page each senior may create for themselves, offer an opportunity to share pride and congratulate your Flint Hill senior. All ads must be submitted before the deadline of Friday, October 27.
PSAT Day — Tuesday, October 10
The PSAT is a national test that is used as a preparation tool for the SAT but also to determine the recipients for the various National Merit programs. All 10th and 11th graders are required to take the test (8:25-11:30 a.m.) on Tuesday, October 10. Because of the amount of students missing throughout the day during the administration of the test, we have canceled classes for 9th and 12th grades on that day. Please note that this day is after the long three-day weekend of Indigenous People’s Day. We planned this elongated weekend to help any 12th graders that want to take a visit to colleges. Specific testing information for 10th and 11th graders will be coming soon from our PSAT coordinator, Dr. Deanna Tomanelli.
Class Ring Information for Junior Families
Juniors and their families will receive an email with information about class rings within the next week. A representative from Herff Jones will be in the Upper School Commons during Break (10:20-10:45 a.m.) on Tuesday, October 3, to accept orders for class rings. Class rings will be delivered in February.
Early Admission Process for Siblings
As members of our Husky family, we are offering an early start to the admission process for siblings who do not currently attend Flint Hill and are interested in applying for the 2024-25 school year.
If you have a child who is not currently enrolled at Flint Hill and you are interested in the application process for the 2024-25 school year, please complete this interest form by Sunday, October 1. Alternatively, you can simply complete the admission application form. You must complete the application package by the end of November to receive an admission notification in mid-December. An email with more details will hit your inbox tomorrow.

Reminder: Invite Your Friends and Neighbors to Flint Hill Events
The Admission Team always appreciates when you refer a family to Flint Hill — they’re often the best fit for our school! We'd love to fill our few spaces with your friends, neighbors, and colleagues. Please bring them to Homecoming on the weekend of September 29 so they can see our community in action, and consider inviting them to the below virtual admission event:
Webinar: Blaze the Trail at Flint Hill — Wednesday, October 4, 12:00-12:45 p.m. While this event is designed for prospective families, current families are welcome to join.
Volunteer in the Igloo and Den
One of the most frequent and fun volunteer opportunities is selling concessions in the Igloo or Den. It’s a great way to meet other parents while getting a glimpse of life in the Upper School or the best view of a game on the Peterson Family Field.
We are now accepting credit cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay in both locations! Volunteers: watch this quick tutorial on the new system. Instructions are also posted in the Igloo and Den.
