Letter From the Division Director
Just as we guide our students in math and reading, helping them build strategies to solve problems, and support them in selecting "right-fit" books, we also ensure they are prepared to make the right choices in times of uncertainty. In the coming weeks and months, our Lower School students will participate in a series of safety drills, including Fire Drills, A.L.I.C.E. Drills, and Severe Weather Drills. These exercises are essential for fostering a sense of predictability and confidence.
Our goal is to create a learning environment where students feel safe and supported. Practicing these drills ensures that if we ever need to evacuate or respond to a potential threat, our students will know exactly what to do — just like they know how to approach a problem in the classroom. We believe that practicing safety routines prepares students for emergencies and empowers them with problem-solving skills that are vital in everyday life.
On campus, our Security Team is a valued and admired part of our community. Your students know and appreciate each member of the team! You might pass by during 6th grade recess and see Security Dave playing quarterback, or spot Mr. Jose helping a student carry their instrument into the building after carpool. We are fortunate to have such a dedicated and talented team serving as the eyes and ears of our campus.
In addition to the work of our Security Team, our faculty and staff have crafted safety protocols, called Essential Agreements, designed to promote a common language that helps keep students safe across various areas. For example, on the playground, when students are on the climbing structure, they might hear us say, "three points of contact at all times," meaning two hands and one foot — or two feet and one hand — must always be secure. The phrase "swings move forward and backward only" reminds students to avoid swinging side to side. These Essential Agreements extend beyond the playground, guiding students during hallway transitions (for which we have silent signs), morning and afternoon carpool, and snack and lunch times, ensuring a safe and consistent environment throughout the school day.
Thank you for your continued support as we prioritize the safety of our community, especially as we look forward to Homecoming and the awesome events leading up to it! Together, we are helping our students build the confidence and resilience needed to thrive in any situation.
Stay Safe,
Jess Henry
Interim Director of the Lower School

Lower School Day of Play — Friday, October 18
The Day of Play is an annual Flint Hill tradition that invites students to work together to plan, build, and play using recyclable materials, basic supplies like tape and glue, and their imagination! Each year, we explore a new theme to focus our building and creating.
We are excited to announce that the theme of this year’s Day of Play on Friday, October 18, is Travel Del Mundo! Each class will create its own tribute to a Spanish-speaking country that they will share with their fellow Huskies as they travel the Spanish-speaking world.
Students will work with their Innovation teachers and homeroom/advisory teachers to plan and prepare for the day. We would love recyclable materials from home to help bring each class’ vision to life. Teachers will share a wish list of recyclable/household materials. We are seeking only materials you already have at home. Please do not purchase any new materials for this day! Whatever you send in will not be returned. Please do not send anything to school before October 15.
We welcome parent volunteers. This year, we will only need morning volunteers. Please complete this Day of Play Parent Volunteers form if you are interested.
Photo Day Portraits Now Available Online
Flint Hill Student portraits are now online for viewing and ordering. Parents should have received an email from Freed Photography with your student's private gallery information. If you have not received that email (check your spam, too), please contact Freed at support@freedphoto.com or call 301.652.5452.
Lower School Picture Makeup Day is scheduled for Friday, October 18. Note that this is a Spirit Dress Friday. If your child will have their photo taken, please be sure they arrive in uniform. They can change into spirit dress afterward.
Early Admission Process for Siblings
As members of our Husky family, we are offering an early start to the admission process for siblings who do not currently attend Flint Hill and are interested in applying for the 2025-26 school year or future years.
If you have a child who is not currently enrolled at Flint Hill and you are interested in the application process for the 2025-26 school year or future years, please complete this interest form by Monday, September 30. Alternatively, you can simply complete the admission application form. You must complete the application package by the end of November to receive an admission notification in mid-December. Please email admission@flinthill.org or call 703.584.2314 with any questions.
Need a Babysitter? Babysitting Network Available
The Flint Hill Babysitting Network was designed to build community and is available exclusively for Flint Hill Families.
The linked database lists the Upper School students who have indicated an interest in babysitting this school year. Where applicable, students have included notes relating to their experience and any relevant skills and/or certifications they have acquired.
This network is provided as an informational resource only. The School does not participate in scheduling, transportation, or fee negotiation. Participating students are engaged members of our school community. Families are encouraged to interview and vet students to ensure they match their individual needs.
