From The Head of School – February 28, 2024

February 28, 2024

Flint Hill Community,

This week, once again, I’m sharing the spotlight for my Head of School message with Mia Burton, our Director of Institutional Equity & Inclusion – with the hope of sharing more of our efforts here at Flint Hill to support our community and a sense of belonging for all Husky students, families, faculty, staff, alumni, and community supporters.

Sincerely,

Patrick McHonett
Head of School

Flint Hill Community,

As the Director of Institutional Equity and Inclusion, I’d like to personally invite you to join us for this weekend’s lineup of Community Festival events.

What began many years ago as a stand-alone potluck dinner has now grown into three interconnected events spanning a two-day period, representing a range of experiences of our JK-12 community. We believe that expanding our capacity to cultivate new relationships identifies and strengthens connections within our community. As articulated in our statement of institutional equity and inclusion, embracing and celebrating differences within a school community is essential to fostering a sense of belonging.

As we work toward our mission-driven efforts of equity and inclusion, we are aware that there are underrepresented voices who have asked for spaces to share experiences and make affinity connections. These spaces are intended to foster authentic individual and collective relationships in an atmosphere reflective of our core values.

This weekend’s Community Festival events serve to strengthen such bonds while showcasing the uniqueness and connectedness of our experiences. The kick-off is scheduled on Friday evening with a parent reception introducing the Communities of Color Collective. All are welcome to this event specifically designed to connect our families and faculty/staff of color. Our guest speaker, Sesha Joi Moon, Director of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion of the U.S. House of Representatives, will share her expertise followed by a brief Q&A session.

Saturday begins with our morning discussion circles focused on the guiding question of, “What Makes a Community?” Small groups of parents, students, alumni, and faculty/staff will dialogue and reflect on a range of topics related to Flint Hill’s community-building efforts. At mid-day, we will shift our focus to culture, entertainment, and food in the festival space to celebrate and appreciate the diversity within the community.

This weekend's events represent the ongoing work and evolution of the Office of Institutional Equity & Inclusion's efforts to support every member of our Husky community. We hope to see you there! Please RSVP to let us know you’ll join us.
