DRIVING SPIRIT AWARDS

The Driving Spirit Award is the highest honor we bestow on Flint Hill faculty and staff. The award recognizes Flint Hill employees who lead by example through dedication to students and the positive energy they bring to our community. Each year, we solicit nominations for the Driving Spirit Award from students, families, and colleagues, and recipients are selected from this list by the Driving Spirit Committee. Since 2007, this award has been given to 57 individuals, 34 of whom are still making an impact on Flint Hill students each day.

2024 Recipients

The Flint Hill Core Values live in Ann Bazzarone’s heart. As a Middle School Learning Specialist, Ann has an uncanny ability to strike the perfect balance of support, understanding, and accountability with her students. For 10 years, she has used her expertise to build authentic, trusting relationships with Middle School students. She creates a safe space to allow students to be themselves, tackle difficult challenges, and utilize tools that help them in their classes and lives for years to come. She actively collaborates with teachers, students, and families, always keeping an individual student’s needs at the forefront of every action.  With an ever-present Diet Coke and a smile, this Husky has pushed students and educators to reach for better, while always embracing the journey’s inevitable challenges along the way.

As Flint Hill’s Web & Media Specialist Shane Brooks is a jack of all trades. He goes above and beyond at every opportunity for his team and this community. Shane has had an unwavering positivity for Flint Hill. We are a wide-spanning JK-12 community, with multitude voices, experiences, and wants, Shane effectively distills and presents the Flint Hill story in a variety of ways. During the pandemic, Shane taught himself professional video and editing skills so that the school community could connect with one another in new and innovative ways. He also dug in deeply to coding, analytics, marketing, and design – embodying the growth mindset we hope for all of our Huskies. Simply put – Flint Hill couldn’t share its excellence with the world in such true and authentic ways without Shane’s care and expertise. He’s a Husky through and through, as well as a proud Lower School dad.

Middle and Upper School History and Social Sciences Department Chair and Upper School teacher, Amy Clement has steadfastly pulled the sled of this community for faculty, parents, and students, serving as a coach and now teacher across multiple grades and ages. She is a mentor, steady hand, and listening ear within her academic department, creating a classroom environment for her students to rise up, show up, and work for the 1% better each day. As one of her colleagues put it simply: “She’s the teacher I wish I had in high school.” Beyond the classroom, Amy has been a leader of important equity and inclusion efforts for our community, serving as an advocate for students and colleagues, as well as the mentor of our Upper School GSA. As a teacher, she challenges students to think deeply; as a department chair, she encourages our faculty to look broadly, and as a Husky, she embodies our Core Values every day.

Assistant to the Director and Assistant Director in the Lower School Donna Holaday has been a dedicated, warm, and welcoming member of our community since 2008. She has experience in the classroom as a teaching assistant, but for over a decade she has made her mark as a steady presence in the Lower School supporting colleagues, students, and families as a rock within the inevitable changes and evolutions that come over time within communities like ours. She approaches every day with an incredible balance of structure to get things done and the flexibility to handle anything that’s thrown her way. There’s not a single Lower School student, family, or employee who hasn’t been enriched by her expertise, kindness, and grace. From attendance and progress reports, to Lower School traditions and new opportunities to imagine she embodies our core values every day.

Associate Director of College Counseling Jeremiah Shepherd brings a serene presence to the Upper School – calmness within a storm, protective, clear, and kind. Jeremiah builds deep connections with students and alumni and has built a rapport that allows him to have valuable – and at times, tough – conversations that illuminate the deep care he has for his students. In an ever-changing landscape, Jeremiah maintains an expertise on data, trends, relationships, and opportunities for our Huskies to grow and succeed in college and beyond. He has been a grade-level dean, and has aptly stepped into the thoughtful and challenging role as mentor to the Honor Council. His strong relationships with students, colleagues, and the higher education world are impeccable, and he continues to be a thought-leader within our College Counseling Team, the Upper School, and Flint Hill at large.
