College Counseling

Flint Hill graduates complete a rigorous program while pursuing their passions. We take a holistic, balanced approach so our students don’t burn out before they matriculate.

Preparing for college, our four full-time college counselors focus on truly getting to know students and guiding them to “right-fit” schools. Students graduate as confident self-advocates with the skills and maturity to excel in college and blaze their own trail in life.

Simply put, college counseling begins when students enroll. Everything from Flint Hill’s graduation requirements to our rigorous course sequences prepares students to apply to college and, more importantly, to succeed when they get there. In grades 9 and 10, students are encouraged to develop the skills and habits necessary to succeed academically. The college counselors meet with 9th graders for a “Flint Hill 101” session to help them understand the importance of their academic choices and performance and to encourage them to engage in the School community. 10th graders participate in several sessions with the college counselors, including an interactive game about the various components of the application process and a course selection overview to select junior year classes. 

The college counseling program shifts to a more individualized process in junior year. Students are assigned their college counselor in the first semester of 11th grade and participate in a series of seminars that begin in September, related to the college search and application process led by their counselor. In addition to learning about the college process so they are prepared to make good decisions, these seminars allow the student and counselor to build a strong relationship.

Each family meets with their college counselor in the winter of their junior year for the family conference, a session designed to learn from both the student and their family about their goals and plans for college and to answer any questions and/or address concerns. The College Counseling Office has an “open door” policy for students and welcomes them at any time. Beyond the several required check-in meetings during junior and senior year, how often a student connects with their counselor depends on their needs. Parents are always welcome to reach out to their family’s counselor.

The College Counseling Office provides a wealth of resources to families, including programming related to the college search overall and topic-specific sessions about need-based financial aid and athletic recruitment. Helping families feel informed and prepared is at the core of our mission so the College Counseling Office also provides timelines and other supports to create structure for a process that can feel overwhelming. Flint Hill uses SCOIR, an intuitive college counseling platform to help students find and investigate schools. Our counselors, however, are likely our most impactful resource. Each of Flint Hill’s four college counselors brings college admission experience to their work with our students, having worked in selective college admissions prior to joining the School community. Our college counselors leverage this experience to help our students navigate the college application process successfully.

The college application timeline has accelerated in recent years, with many of our students applying much earlier in the school year through a variety of Early Action and Early Decision admission plans. As a result, Flint Hill provides guidance and support to help students be ready whenever it’s best for them to apply. Beginning with an application workshop during April’s College Conference for Juniors through virtual summer essay workshops and on-campus Husky Head Starts, the College Counseling Office supports our seniors to ensure they are ready to apply.

We work to help students identify their preferences and needs to ensure that their college search focuses on the right type of school. Building a balanced list is integral to a successful college search. The college counselors help students find options that are appealing to them, that offer the programs they want in an environment in which they will thrive and that reflect a common sense approach to the process. 

Because each of our college counselors has worked previously in college admissions, we are able to provide impactful feedback and advice throughout the application process and as students craft their essays. Each application and essay are reviewed with an eye toward providing constructive feedback to allow the student’s voice to emerge and for the reader to gain a more in depth understanding of them. The student and counselor meet individually to review the feedback. 

Finally, Flint Hill’s college counselors are powerful advocates for our students. Each application is supported by a comprehensive and insightful letter of recommendation that highlights the student’s academic achievements and contributions to the community, providing important context. We foster strong relationships with college admissions officers so they understand the value and strength of the Flint Hill experience.
