    ANNOUNCEMENTS

    APPROACH TO CLASSROOM/ADVISOR ASSIGNMENTS

Our placement process is intentional and centered on the student, like everything else at Flint Hill. The process involves many voices and steps in creating a well-composed class that becomes a tight-knit community the following year.

Strong student-teacher relationships create a safe environment where students are willing to be themselves, take meaningful risks, and challenge themselves as learners. Our process starts with placing each student with their best-fit teacher to facilitate that foundation. While all of our teachers are excellent educators, there is a best fit for each student based on style, personality, and interests. We then begin to build the class around that best-fit teacher, taking into consideration friendships, social dynamics, learning styles, and balance. Each year, we purposefully reshape our classes; that way, students get a different social experience and the opportunity to make new friends.

During the placement process, the Lower School team analyzes the students’ admission files, including interview notes, recommendations, questionnaires, transcripts, testing reports, and notes from conversations with the family. This review helps us consider best-fit teacher and friends as well as the students' learning styles, passions, and needs.

The Lower School team takes all of this feedback and very intentionally creates classes for the following year. The first round of class placement takes countless hours to complete because our student support team ensures all perspectives are considered and that each student has been placed in the best possible class. We then thoroughly review the placement list in early August, just in case there is any new information that needs to be considered before we share the lists with parents.

    FLINT HILL TRADITIONS

    All-School Gathering

The fall All-School Gathering is one of two opportunities during the academic year for the entire School community to come together. This event marks the beginning of the year with the lighting of a lantern that remains lit in the Head of School’s office until the final senior completes their requirements for graduation.

    Flint Hill Day

During the second All-School gathering of the academic year, we convene as a community to celebrate Flint Hill School. We recognize faculty and staff’s years of service and announce the Driving Spirit Award recipients.

    Homecoming Bonfire

Husky families gather at the Peterson Field on the Upper and Middle School campus the Friday night of Homecoming weekend to light the bonfire. We celebrate as an All-School community with hot cocoa, pick-up touch football games, and music from one of our Upper School performing groups leading up to the lighting of the bonfire.

    TIPS FROM COLLEGE COUNSELING

At Flint Hill, our four full-time college counselors focus on truly getting to know Upper School students and guiding them to right-fit schools. Listen to tips from our team on developing an informed college application plan for high school.

    READ, READ, READ

The best preparation for the upcoming school year is to read. We recommend participating in a summer reading challenge, creating a family book club, or setting a goal for your student. Reading builds vocabulary, writing, comprehension, and stamina. Check out a few summer reading resources.

DEPTH VERSUS ACCELERATION: THE FLINT HILL APPROACH

In modern education, where the clamor for rapid progress often drowns out the subtleties of deeper learning, Flint Hill offers a refreshing departure from the status quo. Here, educational philosophy takes root not in the race for speed and acceleration but in foundational understanding.

Drawing directly from neuroscience research, Flint Hill's approach emphasizes the importance of thorough comprehension over hurried advancement. It's a deliberate choice, one that prioritizes the long-term growth and holistic development of every student who walks through our doors. Read more.

From day camp, multi-sport, and STEM experiences for the younger members of our community to athletic and enrichment programs for our early adolescent years to For-Credit and Academic Prep Courses for our Upper School students.
