SIX THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOUR STUDENT STARTS 9TH GRADE

For those of you who have incoming 9th grade students, you might be wondering how to prepare for this big transition in your teenager’s life. We asked Director of the Upper School Don Paige what he wished parents knew before their students started high school. Here are six key pieces of advice he gave us.

    FLINT HILL CARPOOL NETWORK

To assist families who have an interest in forming a new carpool or adding to an existing one, we will launch the carpool availability feature in the Student Directory in July. This resource may be especially helpful to new families who are not served by one of our existing bus routes.

    LOWER SCHOOL LEADERSHIP UPDATE

We are excited to share that Jess Henry, current Lower School Math Department chair and longtime Flint Hill math teacher, will serve as Interim Director of the Lower School for the 2024-25 school year. Mrs. Henry has been a part of the Flint Hill community since 2005, having previously served as an Upper School math teacher, Junior Class dean, and Summer on the Hill camp coordinator during her nearly 20 years at Flint Hill. Mrs. Henry has been a strong proponent of our curricular innovation, student-centered support approach, and living the Flint Hill Core Values each day.

Mrs. Henry will be joined this summer by Assistant Director of the Lower School Stephanie Phillips. Ms. Phillips is a Flint Hill alum, Class of 2008, and is currently wrapping up her position at the Congressional School, where she has been a kindergarten teacher as well as day camp coordinator, head counselor, and programming director for Congressional Camp. Ms. Phillips brings a wealth of classroom and programmatic experience to benefit our Husky students, faculty, staff, and families.

Our spring albums include the Upper School Visual Arts Show, Senior Day, Grandparents and Special Friends Day 2024, the 3rd Grade Farmers Market visit, the African Studies Fort McNair field trip, 5th Grade Poetry Cafe, Night On The Hill, and more.

THERE’S A PLACE FOR YOU AT THE GOLF INVITATIONAL & SKILLS SOCIAL — THURSDAY, MAY 23

Want to meet some current parents? Whether you're a once-a-week or a once-a-year golfer, join the Flint Hill community for a casual golf scramble that brings together our community for a fun day on the links! Although you might not recognize many faces at first, don't be shy. This is a casual way to meet other Huskies. Plus, we’re out there for a worthwhile cause — the Parents’ Association Endowment for Financial Aid in Honor of Sally Hazel.

Head of School Patrick McHonett and his wife Jessica are hosting a Skills Social in the morning. It’s 90 minutes of casual conversation and skills taught by pros and then lunch in the Clubhouse. Plus, rental clubs are provided! Here’s a peek into the fun!

Up for 18 holes? Register as an individual, and we will pair you with fellow Huskies. Or, get a foursome together! All abilities are welcome, so sign up at flinthill.org/golf.

Contact Engagement and Stewardship Director Tiffany Parry with questions.

STILL NEED TO MEET THE LOWER SCHOOL PROOF OF IDENTIFICATION REQUIREMENT?

If you have a new student joining the Lower School and their proof of identification wasn’t verified during New Parent Night, please schedule a 5-minute virtual meeting to complete this step.

PREPARING FOR THE 2024-25 SCHOOL YEAR

The Preparing for the 2024-25 School Year tile can be found on the Resource Board in Husky Hub. It is your go-to resource for planning the start of the new school year. The tile contains checklists for each division containing important information for parents and students, including items such as textbook and supply ordering, dress guidelines, and student health forms. This tile will remain active through the start of the school year, with a limited number of items to be updated over the summer.

Learn more about Navigating Husky Hub: The Resource Board and School Forms, in this recorded webinar. Melissa Turner, Director of Systems Operations and Systems Training, shows you where to locate whatever you need, including required school forms, directories, the school calendar, and more.

REQUIRED BACK-TO-SCHOOL FORMS — DUE FRIDAY, JUNE 14

These online forms are required for student attendance at orientation, registration, classes, and for participation in all school-sponsored activities such as Athletics and Field Studies. The deadline to submit the forms is Friday, June 14.

The forms can be found in Husky Hub. After you log in, a yellow block will appear on the top part of the page with a message detailing the number of forms pending review. After clicking the link, you will be guided to the list of forms for your child/ren. If you receive an error message while completing your forms, or have questions, please contact Enrollment Services Manager Sarah Burnett.

    REQUIRED STUDENT HEALTH FORMS

The Magnus Health system provides a convenient way for all required health forms to be entered electronically and allows for continuous access to your child’s health record throughout the year. The forms are required for student attendance at orientation, registration, classes, and for participation in all school-sponsored activities such as athletics and Field Studies.

Student Health Forms are accessible through the Student Health Forms tile of the Resource Board beginning on Monday, June 10. There is also a link on each checklist of the Preparing for the 2024-2025 School Year tile. The deadline to submit health forms is Thursday, August 1.
