ANNOUNCEMENTS
AN UPDATE FOR UPPER SCHOOL FAMILIES
On Thursday, August 29, at 5:30 p.m., new Upper School parents are invited to learn from Head of School Patrick McHonett, Upper School Director Don Paige, and Assistant Head of School for Institutional Advancement Meredith VanDuyne about ways to partner with Flint Hill in support of your student. Remarks will begin at 5:40 p.m. followed by time to socialize and build parent connections prior to Upper School Back-to-School Night at 6:45 p.m. Students will socialize and build connections during Orientation (see below). UPPER SCHOOL
First Day of School: Monday, August 26. The first two days of school will be dedicated to orientation and community-building activities through Calleva, an innovative outdoor education and adventure program. Read below for more exciting details. Classes will begin on Wednesday, August 28.
The Challenge Course experience empowers and supports participating students to work with others in facing the tasks presented that are often physically demanding (without being overly strenuous) and always emotionally and intellectually stimulating (without being unsolvable or completely overwhelming). The low ropes elements in particular foster communication and teamwork, whereas the high ropes elements help students work individually to break through their personal comfort zones. Reflection is thoughtfully integrated into the process so that teams can grow and improve throughout the experience. Particularly for new students entering our Upper School, this program will mitigate many of the inherent social anxieties students feel starting at a new school and will ease everyone’s transition into the school year.
ORDER SCHOOL ATTIRE NOW
We recommend ordering school dress items now, as orders for items may experience delays later in the summer. The dress guidelines for each division are on the Preparing for the 2024-25 School Year tile on the Husky Hub Resource Board.
Uniform suppliers (Grades JK-6) are:
- Flynn and O’Hara at 9650 Main St Unit 20 Fairfax, VA 22031, 703.503.5966
- Lands’ End Uniform Shop
The online School Store is your one-stop-shop for logo wear, spirit wear, P.E. uniforms and athletic practice clothing.
A uniform exchange will be offered in August before the start of the school year.
HUSKY TO-DO LIST
✅ COMPLETE: REQUIRED STUDENT HEALTH FORMS
The Magnus Health system provides a convenient way for all required health forms to be entered electronically and allows for continuous access to your child’s health record throughout the year. The forms are required for student attendance at orientation, registration, classes, and for participation in all school-sponsored activities such as athletics and Field Studies.
Student Health Forms are now accessible through the Student Health Forms tile of the Resource Board. There is also a link on each checklist of the Preparing for the 2024-25 School Year tile. The deadline to submit health forms is Thursday, August 1.
✅ SAVE THE DATE: AUGUST SOCIALS
Registration will be available in the next New Husky Update.
Middle School — Tuesday, August 20, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Lower School — Friday, August 23, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Upper School — now Thursday, August 29, at 5:30 p.m. (parents only)
✅ OPTIONAL: FLINT HILL CARPOOL NETWORK
To assist families who have an interest in forming a new carpool or adding to an existing one, we will launch the carpool availability feature in the Student Directory in July. This resource may be especially helpful to new families who are not served by one of our existing bus routes.
✅ LOG IN: ACCESS EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
The Preparing for the 2024-25 School Year tile can be found on the Resource Board in Husky Hub. It is your go-to resource for planning the start of the new school year.
