Middle School Newsletter – August 23, 2023

• Maintain an appropriate speed while entering and exiting our campuses.
• All passengers must be completely inside of moving vehicles.
• The use of cell phones by drivers is not permitted during carpool.
• Flint Hill employs off-duty Fairfax County police officers to assist with our morning and afternoon carpool. Please be respectful and follow their directions at all times. 

• Cars must use the Oakton Road entrance to the Middle and Upper School Campus located at 10900 Oakton Road. The Oakton Road entrance may only be accessed from the right-hand turn lane on Oakton Road. Left-hand turns are not permitted from Oakton Road into the Peterson Middle School parking lot. • The academic day begins at 8:00 a.m. We recommend that students be in their advisories by 7:55 a.m. to help them prepare for the day. Students should be dropped off between 7:30 and 7:55 a.m.
• Afternoon carpool begins at 3:25 p.m. The Middle School Campus will open for carpool at 3:00 p.m. every day. PLEASE do not arrive prior to 3:00 p.m.
• Middle School students who live within walking distance have the option to bike or walk to and from school.
• Middle School students are not permitted to walk between the Lower School Campus and the Middle and Upper School Campus during morning or afternoon carpool.

Morning Carpool: Cars should enter the campus using the Oakton Road entrance and continue around the Middle School parking lot to the front entrance of the Peterson Middle School. Students may exit their vehicle anywhere along the sidewalk from the playground to the front doors of the building. We encourage Middle School students to exit on the driver's side of the car and Upper School students to exit on the passenger side. Cars are not permitted to pass one another and parents should stay inside their vehicles. Vehicles will travel in one direction only and leave campus via Jermantown Road. If a student is arriving with an Upper School driver, they may be dropped off in Middle School carpool or walk from the Upper School parking lot using the appropriate crosswalks.

Afternoon Carpool: Cars will be directed around the Middle School parking lot. Cars will then be asked to pull forward and line up past the entrance of the Peterson Middle School before the start of carpool. Parents may pick up Middle and Upper School students from the same location in front of the Peterson Middle School. Upper School students may pick up Middle School students in Middle School afternoon carpool. Upper School students may pick up Middle School students in-person outside Upper School Door 4 and walk to the car together. Middle School students may not wait in the Upper School building after school. 

Middle School Students Attending Upper School Games After School: We encourage students and parents to attend games and events. We must dismiss students to an authorized adult at the end of the school day, Middle School students may not stay after school on their own or meet parents at the field/court. Here is how to make it work:

• If your child is attending the game with you — Either pick up your child in the regular carpool line or park first and meet your child on foot at the Middle School entrance.
• If your child is attending the game with another parent — Let us know about the dismissal change in SchoolPass; the other parent will then pick up your child in carpool or on foot and assumes supervision responsibility during the game.

If the event is later in the afternoon/evening and your child will go to Extended Day first — Your child will go to Extended Day at 4:00 p.m. Please contact Director of After School and Summer Programs Matt McCoart in advance, and let us know about the dismissal change in SchoolPass; you will pick up from Extended Day by 6:00 p.m. using the door by the Middle School playground.
