The Head of School – October 30, 2024

October 30, 2024

Flint Hill Community,

One of my favorite opportunities as Head of School includes connecting with our alumni.  This past week, I had the joy of traveling to New York to chat with recent, college-aged alumni in the city, as well as host a reception for nearly 30 Husky alumni from graduating classes ranging from 1999 to 2019 at our inaugural New York City Alumni reception.

These alumni engagement opportunities serve multiple purposes: to check in on how our Huskies are doing, and how we, as a school, can support their educational and professional journeys; to share exciting Flint Hill happenings with them; and to seek their partnership through philanthropy, input, and career mentorship for current students.

During my trip I heard stories of appreciation – for Flint Hill teachers, for challenging learning experiences, and for enduring friendships – some of which couldn’t fully be appreciated at the time as students. They spoke of being highly prepared for college – not just with regard to classwork, but in self-advocacy, navigating social relationships and diversity of thought and experience on new campuses and locales.

Each alum spoke of transformative teacher experiences – saying that a particular teacher ignited the spark that would later become a college major or professional career. They shared memories of athletics events and arts performances, of senior projects and laughter between classes. The bonds they built at Flint Hill have grown stronger, supporting them through the triumphs and trials of adulthood. One young alum couple (now in their early-30s) met on their first day of 7th Grade at Flint Hill!

These Husky alumni are professional artists; leaders in corporate finance, HR, and PR; human rights and civil rights lawyers; doctors; engineers; and so much more. They are thriving in their careers, but more importantly, they struck me as genuinely happy, thoughtful, resilient, and dedicated humans – proud and appreciative of their experiences at Flint Hill, and eager to see our school continue to evolve and impact the lives of students in similarly positive ways.

Many thanks to everyone who made last week’s Under the Lights festivities a huge success, and to our spirited Lower School students and families for their creativity and joy at today’s Halloween parade. Wishing everyone an insightful and productive conference tomorrow and Friday, as well as outstanding performances of our US Fall Play, The Good Doctor, next week!

Now and always – Go Huskies!
